Warcraft Logs from raid
As many of you know, I log our raid every night to check my personal numbers and use the information to improve my play. With the upcoming DPS Master Class and a few people asking for me to share, I'm going to start linking them here so that people can look over their numbers and get an idea as to where they are at and what they can do to improve. It's important to note that simply looking at recount dps is not very accurate. DPS is only a measure of the damage you do in a certain amount of time, thus the name, damage per second. If you do 1 million dps over a few seconds, and then die, yeah, your dps will look very pretty, but you really aren't doing a lot overall.
Additionally, I'm including a link to the website https://wowanalyzer.com/
This website is very straightforward and easy to use. If you take one of my logs, or any that you may have, and paste the url link into the box that says "enter a WCL report link" and hit analyze, it will pull up that entire log by fight. Pick which boss or pull you'd like to look at, pick your character, and let it calculate. This loads a fairly simple overview of your performance for the particular fight you selected. The very nice thing about it is it will inform you of your uptime on certain buffs or debuffs and recommend if you can improve in those areas. HOWEVER, the website is slow to update some classes due to constant changes from patches or new tiers of raid, so some classes may not be supported. If it comes down to you wanting to see where you could improve and website can't analyze you feel free to come to me and I will gladly lend you a hand all the same.

Question. I've been working on learning nuances, and I've been comparing my performance in these logs to simulations I do with raidbots.com. If the logs show that I spent most of my time/focus on Cobra Shot when Kill Command came out higher in the simulation, I shifted my rotation and got better results. If the simulation showed dps from a talent I wasn't even using, I read up on it and worked it in. What do you feel about this approach?

Sounds to me like you're doing exactly what you should to improve. It's the simple things like that, seeing a different approach or new talent to try, that ends up adding that little bit extra we need to get bosses down. I want to say that generally the Sims will show you what talents people usually take on fights to give you an idea of what's most optimal, so it's definitely a good idea to make note of that and at least give it a try, more than likely its better.
So I think I just found I can just link My profile on World of Logs here and it keeps updated with whatever I log from raid, so for now on, go to this link: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/guilds/userreportslist/532373
They're listed chronologically with the most recent at the top of the list. Let me know if there's any issues with this.
