For those too scare or nervous to pug Tomb...
.. as well as for when progression raid starts rolling again. Hey guys! Just a little informative post to encourage people to get their feet wet in Tomb. I promise, pugging isn't as scary as it seems. To that end, I especially recommend trying any of the bosses before Maiden of Vigilance. At Maiden is where the difficulty really steps up a notch and honestly the fight is a pug killer. Other than that, I wanted to lay out some quick tips and tricks for some of the bosses prior to Maiden, as I've cleared through up to Avatar twice now, once as heals and another time as dps, so here we go(sorry tanks, I don't tank so you're on your own for now):
Goroth- Being the first boss, this guy is really easy. There are 3 main mechanics: shattering star, crashing comet, and infernal spikes. Starting with the spikes, simply he periodically has large fel spikes pop out of the ground. These are avoidable as the ground begins to crumble and crack where they are soon to appear. Just avoid them, however they are used for another mechanic, Shattering Star. With this ability he just throws a giant star at someone in the group. It travels directly between the boss and the marked target. If you aren't being targeted, get outta the way. If you do get targeted however, position yourself between the boss and have as many of the Fel Spikes between you and him so that the star will hit them on its way to you. This greatly reduces the damage from when it hits you. The other mechanic is Crashing Comet, and its simply a debuff that goes out and will do an aoe around you when it falls off, doing damage to anyone around you as well as blowing up pillars in the same area. Just move away. lastly he has a "hide" mechanic, where he casts an ability called Infernal Burning. When he does this just stand behind a Fel Spike.
TL;DR Don't stack with the debuff, hide for Infernal Burning, run Star through pillars, Don't stand in bad.
Demonic Inquisition(THIS IS A TIER PIECE BOSS)- For whatever reason, this fight has given me the most trouble with pugs. The fight is extremely simple though. Basically, you have two bosses that share health, Atrigan and Belac, and a mechanic called Torment. For Torment, you gain an extra action button for an ability called Confess, and a additional resource meter to see how much Torment you have. Basically any damage you take gives you some Torment. If you reach a full bar, you basically do no damage and take a ton more damage from everything. What the goal here is that when you get to around 85 Torment, you press Confess. This tosses you into the soul prison Belac has on his back. Inside there is a "boss" that you never kill, but have to do damage to so he will drop these orange orbs you grab to reduce your Torment levels. From full Torment it takes 3-4 of these to reduce the bar to zero, at which point you can press your extra action button to return to the real fight. This Torment mechanic effects all players regardless of spec, so healers and tanks, you'll be doing this too. In regards to healers, you have the additional job of dispelling a debuff called Echoing Anguish. This is the only debuff in the fight you can dispell. Unless the raid you are in designates a specific spot for people to stand before you dispel, just dispel as soon as they go out. The debuff does a small aoe around the target when it is dispel and spreads some torment to people around, but in Pug groups it's unlikely you'll have the group coordination to work around that, it's minor either way. Belac and Atrigan have their own individual abilities they cast. but only 3 in total matter. The one Atrig does is called Bone Saw. He simply whirlwinds around and does damage. Both attacking him during this, and standing in the Whirlwind gives you large amounts of Torment, so don't do either. Belac on the other hand is crazy and sets himself on fire for his "Don't attack me" ability. It is called Fel Squall and he has green fire all around him. Don't attack him or stand near him during this either. The only other mechanic that matters is Belac casts Pangs of Guilt. This is a interrupt-able spell that shoots a shadowbolt at someone and gives them a load of Torment. Just interrupt it. It should go without saying don't stand in front of either boss as a general rule, but Atrigan does a cleave. Don't be on the tanks.
TL;DR Don't attack Belac during Fel Squall, Don't attack Atrigan during Bone Saw, at 85 Torment hit your extra button, go inside, punch the monster and collect orange balls, press button to leave when Torment is gone. Interrupt Belac, dispell debuffs.
This is the first "wing" of the raid, and is definitely the easiest. Get out there and try it! As always if anyone needs help with anything just contact me in game.
Thank you, Shaboygle! This will definitely be helpful once we get under way! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thanks for this rundown. And thanks to the guys who ran ToS lfr with us Thursday night! It was good for us cowards to see the first three fights with a few troopers to guide us along. I can say the first two are pretty simple, and the third is easy enough if you're aware of the mechanics. Forget turtles and seagulls though. Jellyfish are the enemy!
Of course normal will tougher, but try to do the lfr before Monday if you haven't been in there yet!
